Shree Venkatesh Mandir
The Shri Venkatesh Temple, located in the heart of Mumbai, has a rich history dating back to 1770. This temple, built by Pathare Prabhu Dnyati, has been a cornerstone of the Pathare Prabhu community’s cultural and religious heritage. In this article, we will delve into the temple’s history, highlighting key events, figures, and organizations that have shaped its legacy.
Early Years (1770-1864)
The Shri Venkatesh Temple was built in 1770 by Pathare Prabhu Dnyati. Over the years, the temple underwent several renovations and expansions. In 1816, the Dipmala was constructed, adding to the temple’s grandeur.
In 1864, chawls were built in the corner area of the temple, to ensure regular income for the temple mentainance.
Challenges and Triumphs (1868-1923)
In 1868, shops were constructed at the back of the temple, generating revenue for the temple’s maintenance. However, this period also saw challenges, including a mortgage dispute that led to a court case in 1918. The Managing Committee of Charities, which took possession of the temple and its properties in 1913, played a crucial role in resolving this dispute.
Renovation and Revitalization (1923-1993)
In 1923, the suit against the manager of the temple, Anandrao Ramchandra Desai, was settled, and Desai was paid ₹3,000 to leave the managership. This marked a new era for the temple, with the Managing Committee of Charities overseeing its maintenance and development.
In the 1990s, the temple underwent a major renovation, which was completed in 1994 at a cost of ₹9,61,383.
Recent Developments (1993-Present)
The renovated temple was inaugurated on October 16, 1993, by Mukund Anandrao Ajinkya. Since then, the temple has continued to thrive, with various cultural and religious events being held throughout the year. In 1994, Shri Veerpal Ramrao Rane and his wife, Mrs. Amina Veerpal Rane, innugareted a new shrine in the temple.
The Shri Venkatesh Temple is a testament to the Pathare Prabhu community’s rich cultural and religious heritage. From its humble beginnings in 1770 to the present day, the temple has undergone numerous transformations, shaped by the efforts of dedicated individuals and organizations. As we continue to preserve and promote the temple’s legacy, we honor the memories of those who have contributed to its growth and development.
