History

The Pathare Prabhu Charities organization was founded on 20th September, 1901 at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Mr. Balkrishna V. N. Kirtikar.

The initial objective of the trust was to take over the management of various properties owned by the community.

The Provisional Committee, which was appointed in the year 1901, first took over the Dharamshala and the Rang House of Sonapur for management. In the next year, they added a Dharamshala at Chowpatty under their umbrella.

The trust was formally registered in 1909.

In 1918, the charter of the trust was amended to give it the right to sell, mortgage and otherwise dispose of the assets of the Charities.

In the year 1920, all the income of the charities was transferred to the names of the trustees and accordingly the trust deed was modified and the trustees were empowered.

In the year 1925, the rules were modified and the right of membership was given to adult women of knowledge.

In the same year, the rules of the organization were amended and the managing committee was empowered to appoint a vice-president and an additional secretary.

The properties under the care of the trust went on increasing in number and, in 1930, it was decided that a sinking fund be created to take care of repairs to the properties managed by the trust.

In 1932, the community resolved to throw open all the temples managed by the trust to Harijans

On 27 May, 1953, the Trust was registered under the Bombay Public Trustee Act, 1950 under No. O-1461 (Mumbai),

On 10 August, 1994, The Pathare Prabhu Relief Fund and the The Pathare Prabhu Nursing Association were amalgamated with the Charities trust for easier management of the community’s charity activities.
